Trekking in the Gheralta Mountains is a unique physical challenge. Unlike the grassy plateaus of other regions, Tigray is defined by vertical sandstone, heat, and ancient stone paths. Packing correctly can be the difference between focusing on the view and focusing on your feet.
Essential Gear for Sandstone
- High-Traction Boots: This is your most important item. Sandstone can be slippery, especially where it has been worn smooth over centuries. Look for boots with "Vibram" or similar high-grip rubber soles.
- Lightweight, Breathable Clothing: The sun in Tigray is intense. We recommend long-sleeved "tech" shirts with UPF protection to keep you cool without burning.
- The "Sun Kit": A wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap (it gets windy on the ridges), polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunblock are non-negotiable.
- Hydration Strategy: We recommend a 2-liter hydration bladder plus a spare bottle. The dry mountain air dehydrates you faster than you realize.
For the Evening
Even if it's hot during the day, the temperature drops significantly once the sun sets behind the spires. Pack a lightweight down jacket or a high-quality fleece for the campsite. A headlamp is also essential for navigating the camp and for those early-morning summit pushes.
